NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE:

"He fought like a little tiger in a trap," by Kevin Czapiewski and Cathy G. Johnson

8 pages, 11" by 17" newsprint, grayscale

Inspired by the 1940 novel The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. This comic takes a look at one's sense of identity, its expression, and ultimately, the often-inhospitable conditions that tend to stifle it.

Kevin and I each wrote and drew half of the pages, splitting them horizontally. I'm very proud of the work we've done together.

Debuted at TCAF 2013!

hey everyone! i've started a blog/online portfolio for my art and zines. check it out and subscribe if you're into that kind of thing. there's not too much up yet, but you can see the process i went through to create my first commissioned piece of art (it involves feminist killjoys and dogs) and check out the issues of my zine that are currently in print. then maybe buy said zines and/or submit a request for an original piece of artwork? (please please please! making a living off my art is my dream. several kind folks have already helped me come one step closer to living my ideal life, but i've still got a ways to go until i get there.)

oh and feel free to reblog this. the more the merrier <3

i hang out with walker sometimes when he teaches making comics at the library to kids. one time i was his "teacher's assistant" with cathy g johnson, the situation was while walker was teaching, i did nothing and cathy did all the work. anyway its a very cool class thats FREE FOR KIDS so if you're a traveling comic book artist, you should get in touch with walker and see if you can pop in on his class, the kids will be psyched.

and if you're not a traveling comic book artist, you should get in touch w/ walker anyway and let him know you'd love to contribute somehow to a project! the kids will also be psyched.

also the kids are totally allright.

I don't tend to plug Kickstarters here (even for projects I'm involved with) but this one is for the children, sooo

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/771537978/providence-comics-consortium-rhode-island-antholog

The Providence Comics Consortium is teaching a series of comics workshops for kids at public libraries throughout the state of Rhode Island in May 2013. The PCC will publish an anthology of the kids' comics along with the work of adult cartoonists, representing kids from all over Rhode Island and artists from all over the world. Funds raised through Kickstarter will pay for materials to self-publish and distribute an edition of five hundred 200-page comic books.

Jesse McManus, Mickey Zacchilli, Brian Chippendale, Chris Kuzma, myself and many others will be contributing work to it. The above comic is my contribution from a previous volume, where the kids assigned me 8 scary teachers to write a 3-page comic around:

1. A teacher with a single very hairy boob
2. A one eyed zombie teacher
3. A teacher with a tiny hidden face on her back left over from an undeveloped twin
4. A teacher pregnant with a dragon
5. A bald teacher whose head is so very reflective that it melts his students
6. A teacher with 4 snake heads (one being a cobra)
7. A really really old teacher in her underwear
8. A quiet teacher who is mocked and ridiculed by the students during the day, but who, at night, reveals it's true hooded, long-eared, reptilian form, going from house to house of the misbehaved children, eating them

Oh ho ho ho kids

outofsteparts:

REBLOG GIVEAWAY.

I'm trying to spread the word about the new Out of Step Arts T-shirts that will be debuted at Heroes Con in June (and are available for pre-order at a special price here). So, if you could help me out by rebloging this post, you could win a free OOSA shirt! Pretty easy, huh?

How it works:

  • If you reblog this post, you are automatically entered for your chance to win one (1) OOSA shirt of your choosing; either the Toby Cypress ("Arrival") design or the Liz Suburbia ("Old VA") design.
  • On 6/3/13, I'll randomly select three (3) people as winners. Winners will be notified via Tumblr ask or mail.
  • The three people selected will let me know which design, size, color and "fit" (ladies' or unisex).
  • I'll mail you your shirt for free. Winners will not incur any costs or fees.
  • If the person(s) selected cannot be contacted via tumblr, or do(es) not respond timely, another person(s) will be be chosen.

Not bad for clicking a button. Thanks for your help getting the word out about the shirts.

Look at these shirts!

TCAF 2013 Breakdown

Ok ok, TCAF is this weekend and I'll be there! I'll be there with Cathy G Johnson and together we will be debuting our collaborative comic "He fought like a little tiger in a trap." We will be sitting at table 233 on the second floor, conveniently located almost directly in front of the entrance! We'll be right next to the illustrious Alternative Comics (including an appearance by Robin McConnell of Inkstuds) on one side and Caitlin Skaalrud (a fine comics artist, publisher of Talk Weird Press, and one of the organizers of Autoptic) on the other. Fine company indeed.

But you know, that's not even the half of it. Along with all the usual goodness you'd expect from what Czap Books offers (like all of Liz Suburbia's mini-comics, the PUPPYTEETH anthology), we'll also have the brand new mini from Jessi Zabarsky which looks just as beautiful as you might imagine.

We're also going to be repping L Nichols' Grindstone Comics. This means that I'll have copies of L's Flocks 1 and 2, and the new Little Garden mini from Darryl Ayo that debuted at MoCCA a few weeks ago.

And this is just what I'll have on my side of the table. I expect Cathy to have all of her gorgeous comics and prints on hand.

Sorry to everyone I covered up on the map above. Take a look at the full map for the show here.
